3. Alabama and Auburn look great heading into the Iron Bowl

Alabama isn’t a shoo-in to win the SEC West, or the SEC. Crazy, isn’t it? But that’s the kind of college football season it’s been. It all comes down to Alabama and Auburn next week, and it’s going to be a doozy.

Alabama spent the first nine weeks of the college football season ranked first in the AP Poll. Their No. 1 ranking and undefeated record didn’t come without some bumps and bruises though.

When the first College Football Playoff poll came out three weeks ago the Crimson Tide were ranked second behind Georgia. Since then, as tends to happen, the Tide have gone on a roll. They now sit at 11-0 and top the College Football Playoff poll after undefeated Georgia fell to then No. 10 Auburn.

Auburn’s season is a different story. The Tigers lost to then No. 4 Clemson in the second game of the season and then struggled mightily against a LSU team that had previously lost to Troy. Gus Malzahn was never quite on the hot seat, but there was still some grumbling from War Eagle fans.

With the exception of those games Auburn has found its footing. Since the loss to Clemson they have beaten every top 25 team they’ve faced. They’ve scored 40 or more points in each of the last three weeks, putting up 42 on Texas A&M and Louisiana-Monroe and 40 on Georgia.

When the Iron Bowl kicks off next week it will be to decide the West and in a season full of chaos it’s just about the only “normal” there’s been. With so much on the line it’s sure to be another classic.
