Texas A&M football didn’t sign Brock Purdy, who picked the Iowa State Cyclones on National Signing Day, but it might not matter for the Aggies in the long run.

The 3-star quarterback  from Gilbert, Arizona, brought it down to the wire to announce his commitment. While most were assuming he would go to Iowa State, there was still talk that he might come down to College Station.

Even though he’s only considered a 3-star recruit, I think he has all the makings of a big-time talent. Is he the biggest guy? No, but I think guys like Johnny Manziel and Baker Mayfield are convincing recruits to overlook that.

What does this mean for the Gigem Gang 2018?

Honestly, I don’t think there will be a huge impact on the class for a few reasons.

1) I don’t think that he had a legit start to play here in Aggieland. I think Nick Starkel will have the starting job locked up this fall. It would be tough to beat him out and you would still have to beat out Kellen Mond and Connor Blumrick. He’d also have to battle with fellow 2018 quarterback signee James Foster.

2) Let’s say he does beat out those guys. It may not matter. Headlining the Aggie recruiting class of 2019 is Grant Gunnell, 5-star QB out of St. Pius High School. Barring an impeccable season by Purdy, there’s a good chance he would benched because Gunnell can gun it. (You like what I did there?)

With Texas building a formidable defense down in Austin and those high-flying offenses they have out in the Big 12, Brock will have his work cut out for him. Time will only tell how he turns out but I have confidence he could be huge for the Cyclones.
