Texas A&M Football: Aggies opting for aggression in 2022
The Texas A&M football quarterback conundrum is finally solved. Coach Jimbo Fisher has opted to roll with redshirt sophomore Haynes King as the starting quarterback for 2022.
Based on how people felt about King after the 2021 season, this comes at a bit of a surprise. LSU transfer Max Johnson came into town, and it started sounding like the QB1 job was his to lose.
King ended up having a great camp. All three of the quarterbacks in the group have good or great camps, but King’s development has seemingly taken off, and Fisher believes in his guy.
Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher is opting for the aggressive route by starting Haynes King.
Regardless of what you think of King, there’s no doubt that he can make big plays happen. However, with that style of play comes some mistakes.
If Fisher went with Johnson at QB1, you know what you’d get. You would get a guy who can manage the offense, and not give the ball up.
Johnson does have his faults, though. The biggest concern is his lack of ability to get the ball out of his hand in a timely manner. Last season, Johnson finished fourth in the SEC in sacks with 33 last season. Many of these were due to him holding the ball too long.
The difference with King is that, yes, he will hold on to the ball, but he will give the play a chance. He doesn’t panic, generally, and he has the speed to get away from defenders and give his receivers time to get open.

It’s not just opting for King as an aggressive way of thinking coming from Fisher, but also leading up to this season, adding D.J Durkin was another move that seemed like the culture was shifting.
Durkin is an aggressive defensive mind. He runs his scheme off the idea that he can force quarterbacks to make mistakes, which leads to turnovers.
He managed to take a terrible Ole Miss defense and make them respectable in two seasons. Now, he has all the talent in the world to work with.
The culture is shifting in College Station. These decisions by coach Fisher shows that the team is going to be aggressive this season A lot of mistakes will be made, but a lot of mistakes will be forced and taken advantage of, making this team scarier than years’ past.
