Mike Elko dropped a bomb on Texas A&M fans today when he announced that four Texas A&M players would not be playing this season— two by reason of injury and two since they have departed the team. RB Deondrae “Tiger” Riden and DT Chace Sims are both set to miss the season with injuries, while OL Nelson McGuire and WR Jerome Myles have left the program for what Mike Elko referred to as “personal reasons.”
Myles has been one of the most inquired-about players on the Texas A&M team since arriving in the 2025 cycle as Mike Elko’s first five-star receiver commitment. He was a late flip from the USC Trojans and was considered a major victory for the program after years of subpar receiver play, but he was coming off of a year wherein he missed the entire season due to a knee injury.
Unfortunately, he also missed his entire first year in College Station thanks to a knee injury as well, setting him even further behind schedule in his development. Now, though he has been practicing with the team during fall camp, Elko has announced that he is no longer with the program— but far from doom and gloom, this should hardly affect Texas A&M fans at all.
Former 5-star Jerome Myles leaves Texas A&M, but Aggie fans shouldn’t fret
There’s been a constant refrain this offseason of how deep the receiver room is for Texas A&M heading into this year. The skill obviously took a huge step forward in last year’s group, with KC Concepcion and Mario Craver leading the way, but there wasn’t a lot behind them, or much in the way of versatility, when all was said and done.
That’s not the case this season. With Craver returning, the ascension of Ashton Bethel-Roman and Terry Bussey, and the addition of Isaiah Horton, the Aggies’ top four receivers are all going to see a significant number of snaps and targets as a part of a passing offense that could be even more dangerous this year.
That’s not even to mention the addition of true freshman receiver Aaron Gregory, who has been turning a lot of heads in camp. Myles, from all reports, was behind all five of these players in the rotation, and possibly also behind guys like TK Norman and Jayden Warren.
The depth of this room takes a hit with this news, but Myles’ departure won’t affect things at all for this upcoming season. He was unlikely to muscle his way ahead of the above names to get on the field, so while this dashes hopes that Aggie fans had that he would eventually live up to his five-star billing, those hopes had grown quite dim by this point anyway.
We may never know exactly what the reasoning was behind Myles’s departure, but it’s easy to infer there had been a lack of production compared to the resources the Aggies had dedicated to him thus far, and a misalignment between the player and the team resulted. It takes a lot to land a five-star receiver, but once you get to campus, those rankings are out the window, and it’s all about production.
Myles does have undeniable talent, but injuries have derailed him to this point in his career. Hopefully, he can find a spot to land on his feet and get a fresh start at a program where he’ll be able to make an impact immediately— but for Aggie fans, though, this is not near the hit to the roster that some are making it out to be.
