Texas A&M fans knew better than most that KC Concepcion was going to be a star as soon as he got to the NFL— while some draft enthusiasts questioned things like his drop rate and ability to hold up at his smaller size, the Aggie faithful knew from just his one season in the maroon and white that he would change the doubters’ minds quickly.

KC broke out in a big way in his first preseason game against the Chicago Bears, recording several extremely electric plays even in the limited touches he got. After catching everyone’s attention, he has only continued on his rapid upward trajectory— and in a joint practice with the Bills today, he really showed off his prodigious talents.

The comparison to Zay Flowers is probably a little bit inaccurate— KC is definitely bigger than Flowers, who stands at only 5’9” and 183 LBs, while Concepcion is 5’11” and nearly 200 LBs. But you can see the electricity with the ball in his hands even just from these cut-ups.

Browns fans are quickly learning that KC, who was panned by some as a low-value pick for his spot in the first round, is going to grow into a star for them sooner rather than later. He’s not just a gadget player who you need to scheme open on trick plays— he’s a real-deal receiver who can make plays down the field.

There’s a massive, lingering question almost endemic to Cleveland at this point vis-à-vis the quarterback situation— namely, will Deshaun Watson, Dillon Gabriel, or Shedeur Sanders be the man behind center this year?— and that will obviously have a lot of relevance for KC’s numbers in his first year. But with this kind of ability, you just need to get the ball near him, and he will bring it in.

It’s hard to think of a more arduous landing spot for a receiver than Cleveland, given their aforementioned passing woes, but even now, Concepcion’s talent is hard to deny. Just look at that pass in the above clip— his release against the corner gets him just enough space, and he snags the ball out of the air with a high degree of difficulty.

If KC can keep making these kinds of plays, he’ll shine no matter the QB situation. However, there’s still some hope— especially under as creative of an offensive mind as Todd Monken, the Browns’ new coach, KC will get the ball in plenty of scenarios.

The auspicious start to his NFL career was anticipated by Aggie fans, but now Cleveland— and soon, the rest of America— will see just how talented of a pass-catcher KC is. Don’t be surprised to see him put up a whole highlight reel’s worth of plays before the season really even gets underway.
