Texas A&M linebacker Daymion Sanford is one of the most important players on this Aggie defense, but he has yet to play a snap for the Aggies this year. Sanford sustained what looked like a debilitating injury at the end of the first half of the spring game, but his recovery has gone faster than anyone expected.
After dressing out last week against Missouri State, but not playing a snap, Sanford's status is again up in the air heading into this matchup with the Arizona State Sun Devils. No. 27 is reportedly a game-time decision for the Aggies, according to On3's latest reporting on the situation.

The program was pretty mum on Sanford's status throughout the majority of the summer, but optimism began to creep back in for Aggie fans when he headed to SEC Media Days to represent A&M. Elko's comments around that time were also encouraging, as he repeatedly mentioned how he expected Sanford to have a huge year for the maroon and white.

Word emerged when Sanford made his way to Tampa along with Elko and Marcel Reed that his spring time injury was a broken fibula rather than a soft-tissue injury. That helped explain why his recovery seemed so far ahead of schedule compared to what many were expecting when thoughts of ACL tears and the like were running through fans' heads in the immediate aftermath of the injury.
Sanford's return would be massive for the Aggies, especially in this game. Kenny Dillingham runs a heavy RPO attack on offense, which will be relying on reading defensive keys to try to make Elko's unit "wrong" no matter which way they choose. The linebackers for Texas A&M will be key in stymying Dillingham's attempts, and a guy like Sanford— who is not only uber-athletic, but very experienced— being out there will be key to this unit playing at their best.
There is no coach in the country better than Elko at drawing up schemes to stifle that kind of RPO attack, but you need the players out there that can consistently execute it. Sanford has shown that he can not only be in the right place, but leverage his speed and power to make up for mental mistakes when they happen on the defense.
In his stead, both Noah Mikhail and Ray Coney played very well against Missouri State, en route to allowing a paltry 67 yards of offense for the game. In other words, it's not like losing Sanford for this game would mean the Aggie defense is doomed, but with a game in Death Valley looming on the horizon, you need to get Sanford back up to speed as soon as possible.
Sanford's status will be updated closer to kickoff. Hopefully, we see no. 27 out there making plays for the Aggies all afternoon.
