Mike Elko stuffs Marcus Freeman in a locker with bombshell 5-star commitment

Everyone thought this one was going to go the way of the Irish, but Mike Elko had other plans.

Mike Elko now has his linebacker of the future, as five-star LB Kaden Henderson has committed to the Aggies over the LSU Tigers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. It was the Irish where many had Henderson penciled in to commit to as recently as only a couple of days ago, but the final push from Texas A&M was what had them win out when all was said and done.

This is a massive win for the Aggies over another top-recruiting program in the sport, as Notre Dame currently holds the no. 4 class in the country. The Irish had been dedicated to landing Henderson and were working hard to get him on campus this upcoming weekend, but the Aggies’ efforts to lock this one down spoiled Freeman’s designs.

This has to be completely infuriating for Notre Dame fans, who are already sick of the Aggies following their dramatic victory in South Bend last September. This was shaping up to be a big victory for them right up until it wasn’t, and the fact that it’s the Aggies who stole Henderson away has to be even more of a thumb in the eye.

Texas A&M’s recruiting dominance continues by landing Kaden Henderson over Notre Dame and Marcus Freeman

Henderson becomes the seventh player rated as a five-star by at least one service to commit to the Aggies, joining Mark Matthews, Kennedy Brown, Zyron Forstall, Raylaun Henry, JayQuan Snell, and Kamarui Dorsey. Forstall was also a win over the Fighting Irish, for what it’s worth, and the Aggies are still locked in a battle with Freeman and company for five-star IOL Albert Simien.

Though he’s one of seven players with the five-star designation, fans shouldn’t make any mistake: this is one of the biggest victories of the cycle we’ve yet seen. That’s not just because of the come-from-behind nature of it, or the team that the Aggies vanquished in order to land this commitment. Rather, it’s because of the skill set that Henderson will be bringing to Aggieland.

The Aggie faithful have seen the importance of a lockdown pass defense in the past, as their porous secondary in 2023 doomed them more than once. This last season, though, it was giving up far too many big runs that ended up being so costly for the Aggies on the field.

That’s why adding a player of Henderson’s caliber at this position is so important for the Aggies. Many linebackers who are elite athletes end up being undersized edge rusher types in college, as they are not equipped to stay in the middle of the defense from down to down, especially in a league like the SEC— but that’s no worry at all when it comes to Henderson.

He’s a player that can fill that inside linebacker role with aplomb and stick there rather than transitioning into what we saw LSU try to do with Harold Perkins in his first year. His football IQ is unquestioned, and when paired with his elite athletic traits, you’re looking at the type of player who can easily end up as a first-round selection when he eventually declares for the draft.

This may be the biggest win yet this cycle for Texas A&M and Mike Elko— and they’re far from done. There are still several five-star targets left on the board as the Aggies close in on the nation’s top overall class.
