New CBS article shows just how debilitating injuries were in Conner Weigman's time with Texas A&M football
Texas A&M football has been plagued with an extremely unfortunate level of inconsistency at the quarterback position over the last four seasons. From Haynes King going down against Colorado in the second game of the 2021 season to Conner Weigman's injuries in 2023 and 2024— not to mention the disaster that was 2022— things have been a roller coaster ride at the signal caller spot for far too long.
Maybe the most tragic sequence of events, though, is what we saw this last year. Though it ultimately led to what most Aggie fans consider a positive outcome, the emergence of Marcel Reed, the way things ended up with the aforementioned Conner Weigman in College Station had a lot of Aggies disappointed.
Word got out before the game at Florida, just the third contest of last season, that Weigman was dealing with an injury and would be unavailable. That's when Reed stepped in and piloted the Aggies to victory in the Swamp— but in the immediate aftermath, amidst the inevitable QB controversy that ensued, fans began to attempt to pinpoint exactly where Weigman sustained his injury.
As it turns out, according to a new article from CBS Sports, it was a pair of injuries. Initially Weigman suffered a blow to his AC joint against Notre Dame on his throwing shoulder, and attempting to play through that injury against McNeese led to a strain in his bicep.
With the pain of having to sit out for an extended period fresh in his mind— the article reports that the hit he took last year against Auburn meant that his talus bone broke in nine places, ruling him out for the rest of the 2023 season— he rushed back against Missouri, and looked outstanding in that contest. But his mechanics weren't right, and the pressure that LSU was able to get home against him meant that the Aggies had to go to Reed.
The rest is history. Weigman hit the portal and headed back home to Houston. The Aggies are now all-in on Marcel Reed.
Time will tell if A&M ended up in a favorable spot here. I think Reed has some really dynamic potential, but Weigman's talent, when he's on, is undeniable. One way or another, we'll find out.
