Power ranking the SEC after week 2: #14 Mississippi State

. . 530. b. . . . . Previous ranking: 14. 14

At one point late Saturday night, Lebby’s Bulldogs trailed Arizona State 30-3. There’s something to be said for never giving up, of course, but that helps give some ugly context to the final 30-23 score.

Arizona State does not appear to be a very good program; yet, they were able to dispatch MSU with relative ease (again, ignoring the late rally). Lebby’s crew looks especially susceptible on the lines of scrimmage; they allowed 6.1 YPC at a 59% success rate, while averaging only 0.89 YPC on 38% success themselves.

That’s not a recipe for success, even considering the fact that the Bulldogs looked to boast a relatively decent passing game. That won’t really translate against more talented defenses than Eastern Kentucky and Arizona State.

As the team continues to find its identity, they may turn into a squad that could be a thorn in the side of the upper echelon of the conference. Right now, though, it looks like it may be a tough row to hoe to arrive at that place.
