Power ranking the SEC after week 2: #11 Vanderbilt

b. . 537. team. Previous ranking: 11. . 11. . .

Vandy did what a good team is supposed to do against a squad like Alcorn State: they ran it up and played suffocating defense. They’re beginning to break away from this bottom tier of teams, but I still need to see more before I put them up in the SEC middle class.

That said, Diego Pavia remains a complete revelation up in Nashville. His toughness and gritty play are fitting well with the culture that Clark Lea is trying to build up there, and he has raised the ceiling for the Commodores to a height that I’m not sure anyone saw coming before the year.

Their mettle is about to be tested in a big way, however. They’ve got three out of their next four games on the road, heading to Georgia State, Missouri, and Kentucky, with a visit from Alabama between the Tigers and Wildcats.

Vandy should be able to take care of GSU with no issue, but Mizzou is a different animal. Kentucky is reeling, and Auburn will come to town later in the season with a lot of questions as well.

The Commodores need only beat Big Blue and War Eagle to get to bowl eligibility, provided they can take care of business against States both Georgia and Ball. Anything else on top of that would be gravy for Lea’s group.
