Power ranking the SEC after week 2: #10 Oklahoma

. . . . 10. Previous ranking: 9. 815. b. .

I don’t think many Oklahoma fans at all expected their game against the lowly Houston Cougars to be a dogfight in which neither team exceeded 20 points. Yet… here we are.

Jackson Arnold is clearly a very talented quarterback, but he looked lost against a very middle-of-the-road secondary (at best) in Houston. The run game was not near what it needed to be, either, averaging only 2.59 YPC on 31% success.

The Cougars were able to pass with relative success, too, averaging 9 YPA on 60% success. Luckily for the Sooners, it didn’t end up converting into points more often than not—even though it probably should have.

The fact is this: a look at the advanced numbers tells an unbiased observer that the Sooners should have lost that game. Even though Houston wears a Big 12 patch on their uniform, they still don’t have the cache of a Power 4 squad, so such a loss would have been rightly seen as an extreme setback. OU needs to figure some things out on offense—and pretty quickly.
