Recruiting ranking updates put Aggies’ 2027 recruiting hopes directly in jeopardy

This is not a huge gut punch for the Aggies, but it’s certainly dismaying for fans who wanted to see this barrier broken.

Texas A&M fans have extremely high hopes for this upcoming recruiting cycle, where the Aggies have built a pretty sizeable lead on the rest of the country in the class rankings. Texas A&M has landed six players already that are ranked as a five-star by one or more services, which just speaks to how elite the job that Mike Elko and company are doing is.

However, those rankings are obviously fluid. Just because a player is ranked as a five-star today doesn’t mean he will be tomorrow; just because one service is high on a guy doesn’t mean the other services will be,.

The latest round of recruiting ranking updates was unfortunately unkind to Texas A&M’s current and prospective commits, which puts a lofty goal for this cycle in jeopardy. While Texas A&M will be extremely difficult to unseat as the top overall class for this cycle, they may no longer have a shot at the top class of all time.

Texas A&M’s unbelievable goal for 2027 recruiting could have just become a pipe dream

Here’s how the Rivals Industry rankings shake out after 247Sports updated their top group a few days ago:

A few things jump out here immediately. The first is that both JayQuan Snell and Raylaun Henry have been left off of this list, despite being ranked as five-stars by other outlets. Kennedy Brown has also dropped quite a bit, all the way down to 25 even after being ranked as the top player in the nation at one point by 247Sports.

That’s due to an inexplicable fall in the 247 rankings, where he has fallen all the way down into the mid-70s in those ratings. There’s really no reason being offered for why Kennedy fell that far; it just happened on 247’s website— just like what happened with Zyron Forstall on Rivals’ website.

With the Aggies fading for John Meredith, too, this seems like it’s a negative development as well. The Aggies have always had a great shot with both of the top two corners in the nation, with great relationships with both Meredith and Joshua Dobson, but Dobson is slipping in these rankings as well.

This update also removed players like WR Eric McFarland— who the Aggies currently lead for, according to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine— and dynamic RB Landen Williams-Callis from the ranks of the five-stars. They are still very highly-rated, but no longer in that elite club.

Where Texas A&M seemed to have a great shot to surpass the 2022 class in their final rating a month or so ago, that now looks like an extremely faint and remote hope. There’s still time for these ratings to even out more, and for industry experts to recognize what Elko and company have been seeing in guys like Loia Valade, but that’s no guarantee, obviously.

While this is a dismaying update for those hopes, it doesn’t change the actual quality of the players that the Aggies have on their commit list. Texas A&M is still in a great place going forward thanks to the players that they have in the boat for the upcoming class.

Whether or not the recruiting industry recognizes the quality of these players is, ultimately, not relevant. Mike Elko’s process is proving to be exactly what the Aggies have needed this cycle, and that will continue to be true.
