Texas A&M basketball coaching rumors: Is Maryland passing over Buzz Williams and moving on to other candidates?

Texas A&M basketball fans have been on a roller coaster of emotions recently. What with the late-season losing streak, the win over Auburn, the loss to Texas in the SEC tournament, rumors cropping up about Buzz Williams departing, and the second-round loss in March Madness, it feels like a lifetime has passed over the course of this past month.

Over last weekend, Aggie fans were faced with the strong possibility that Buzz may be departing Aggieland for College Park, Maryland, as Kevin Willard— the Terps' former coach— was hired at Villanova. There was a lot of chatter linking Buzz to Maryland, such that most fans had almost written it in sharpie that he would be headed up that way.

However, as of this morning, there are even more rumors coming around that Maryland is not too hot on this possibility. With Buzz apparently shopping himself openly for the job, he may have come across as "too desperate," as it was put on X this morning by some of the same voices that were earlier mentioning he may be leaving.

This is certainly a reversal, obviously. It felt like a foregone conclusion that the Aggies would be opening up a coaching search here pretty presently, but now it looks like they may be in an awkward situation— standing pat with a coach who was attempting to leave.

Even while there have been talks of Buzz leaving, insiders such as Billy Liucci have indicated that the Aggies would not pay a buyout to fire Williams, so the only way he would not be the head man next year would be a retirement or another school hiring him. If he truly is "desperate" to get out, though, then he may just find a way to do that.

Whether that's taking a less-than-ideal position somewhere else, at a mid-major for example, or simply hanging it up for a season or so, Buzz could get out if he really, really wants to. And if that level of desire is what is keeping Maryland from zeroing in on him, then I'd bet we see it manifest in some other way.

As of right now, though, it doesn't seem like Buzz will be the guy up in College Park, putting the Aggies in a strange holding pattern. Hopefully, this situation resolves itself sooner rta
