Texas A&M’s official visit session this last weekend is already paying off in a massive way, as the Aggies have gained two commitments from players that were on campus during that time. The Aggies have picked up verbal pledges from linebacker Aston Whiteside, out of Burleson, Texas, and edge rusher Fredrick Ards out of Orlando, Florida.
These fill two needs for Texas A&M on the defensive side of the ball in a big way. Whiteside is only a three-star recruit right now, but take a look at his film if you get the chance— he plays in an intentional and explosive way as a linebacker, and his frame is more than sufficient to hold up against the grind of the SEC. He’s a clear candidate to end up shooting up the rankings quickly.
Whiteside becomes the first linebacker commit of the cycle for the Aggies, but hopefully not the last. Texas A&M is hot in pursuit of a five star at the position in Kaden Henderson, and they are looking like top dog in his recruitment right now even as Miami pulls out all of the stops.
Texas A&M pulls in two more commitments after huge official visit weekend
The other commitment, Fredrick Ards, is a big win for the Aggies as well. While Whiteside committed to the Aggies over schools like Kentucky and Texas Tech, Ards was a major race for Texas A&M with schools like Florida, FSU, and others in hot pursuit.
Ards ranks as the 68th overall player in the 247Sports Composite. He’s a top-10 edge defender in the country, as well as a top-7 player in the state of Florida. This is a big get for the Aggies, in other words.
Texas A&M is locking down the Sunshine State this cycle, pulling nearly every big-name recruit that they want out of Florida. They hope that trend will continue with a guy like the aforementioned Kaden Henderson, as well as IMG Academy receiver Eric McFarland (who also visited this past weekend), and they continue to be well-positioned to do that.
Now boasting 17 commitments, the Aggies are approaching the 300-point rating threshold on 247’s Composite rankings that has traditionally been thought of as a championship-level class. This could end up paying off big time in the years to come, as long as the Aggies can keep stacking this level of class.
The great news is that the Aggies are far from done. John Meredith, who many had conceded as a loss to Texas, was back on campus today after visiting this past weekend, showing that the Aggies have made a big move in that recruitment. They’ll have to weather his upcoming visit to Texas, but it looks like A&M made some headway there if his return to campus is anything to judge by.
This upcoming weekend will be big as well. Guys like Kaden Henderson will be back in College Station, and Texas A&M will be looking to lock them down. 2027 recruiting is only getting more and more exciting with every passing weekend— don’t get on the bandwagon too late.
