Texas A&M has been recruiting lights-out this cycle, but maybe their top target in the nation— five-star corner John Meredith— just recently began to trend elsewhere. The Texas Longhorns have begun to come on very strongly for Meredith in recent days, enough that the recruiting insiders across the nation have begun to switch their prediction from A&M to Texas for the nation's top cornerback.
It seemed like things were moving very quickly in a negative direction for the Aggies, as Meredith looked poised to commit to the Longhorns in short order quite recently. Nothing has yet happened, however, which in itsel fseems to be a good sign for the Aggies' pursuit— they've gotten Meredith to slow down, at the very least.
Now, some more positive news has broken for the Aggies, as Landyn Rosow of AggieHuddle has announced that Meredith will be moving up his official visit to College Station to the last weekend in May after previously being scheduled to head there in mid-June. The Aggies already have a huge group of high-level players scheduled to visit that weekend, so they could really help themselves with this earlier date.
Elite 5-star CB John Meredith gives Aggies a shot of hope by moving up official visit
This will give Texas A&M a chance to make their pitch to Meredith sooner, helping remind him of just how great his fit in College Station would be. There's a reason he was trending so massively towards Texas A&M in the late fall and into the winter, and Mike Elko and staff have a chance to show him that.
Especially if Texas A&M can get some of their other five-star defensive back commits on campus for that weekend, the other recruits will be able to work on him too. The Aggies could have an insanely star-studded secondary if they're able to finish it off the right way, as they already have three five-star DBs in their commit list in Raylaun Henry, Jayquan Snell, and Kamarui Dorsey.
Adding Meredith to that equation would make it the most elite group in Texas A&M history at the position for one recruiting class— frankly, it would be one of the best of all time. It's not like there are programs every year that are able to pull in four five-star players at the position.
Even if Meredith does opt to go elsewhere— whether Texas or another former leader of his in Alabama— the Aggies still have a shot to complete their DB class with another five-star. Joshua Dobson, out of the Charlotte, NC area, is also high on the Aggies, so Texas A&M is in a good spot whichever way this goes.
The concern with this move would only be that the traditional wisdom is that it's best to get the final visit in these high school recruiting scenarios. It's Ohio State that holds that honor for Meredith right now, though, unless he shuffles his OV schedule even more.
All in all, this should be a positive given where Texas A&M is positionally right now. They need to make up some ground, and getting Meredith on campus for an OV should help them get right back into the thick of things in a massive way. This is a sly move by Elko and the Aggies— hopefully, it will pay off.
