Texas A&M Baseball: Joel Davis Leads the Way as Aggies Power By Incarnate Word
By Tim England
Texas A&M baseball, led by a strong performance from senior Joel Davis. took care of business, defeating Incarnate Word on Wednesday night at Olsen Field.
It took a little bit to get going, but No. 15 Texas A&M (8-1) powered through to a 12-5 win over Incarnate Word (5-5) led by senior Joel Davis. Davis went 4-for-4 at the plate with 5 RBI and hit his second homer in as many games. He was named D1 Baseball’s player of the day for his performance.
Overall, the Aggies came out slow as they surrendered two early runs. The team would respond with two of their own in the bottom half. After giving up one more run in the 2nd, the Aggies opened it up with 10 unanswered runs as the bats came to life. The Cardinals were able to score a pair of runs late. At that point the outcome of the game had long since been decided.
In the top of the 3rd Inning, Junior Lee May Gonzalez came in to relieve Kaylor Chafin and put on a real strong performance. Chafin struggled early giving up three runs on four hits in only two innings of play.
Gonzalez looked strong in his first season appearance, retiring the first seven batters he faced. Rob Childress was thrilled with his performance:
"“Out of the bullpen, Lee May Gonzalez took their momentum completely away from them. He was fantastic.”"

Gonzalez finished with 6 strikeouts, giving up only 1 hit over 4 innings. Corbin Martin and Kyle Richardson had solid nights on the mound as well, neither giving up a run. Both pitched one inning apiece as they combined for three strikeouts.
Cason Sherrod had his roughest outing of the season so far to close the game, as he allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in the 9th. Texas A&M hasn’t fully set on a late closer and it is something the Aggies do need to solidify before conference play begins. He will certainly be called upon in Houston this weekend.
