The Texas A&M Baseball team ended the weekend on a low note, losing their final two games on walkoff hits to TCU and Baylor.

"“We got our hearts ripped out last night and thought that was about as bad as it could be, but I don’t guess it wasn’t.”"

That quote from Rob Childress summed up Sunday night for the Aggies. Texas A&M (9-3) suffered another late inning heartbreak as Tucker Cascadden of the Baylor Bears (11-1) hit a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th to win it for the Bears 6-3.

Texas A&M amassed 12 hits and were only able to score three runs during Sunday’s contest. The first run came in the 3rd inning, courtesy of a Braden Shemake double, driving in Logan Foster. Walker Pennington assisted later that inning by grounding out to 2nd which scored Shewmake. The 3rd run occurred on a Joel Davis single in the 5th inning.

Mitchell Kilkenny had a phenomenal performance Sunday night. Kilkenny went 7 innings, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 7. On a night that Texas A&M needed their starter to pitch deep, Kilkenny stepped up and filled the role.

However, things yet again came undone in the 9th inning. Landon Miner began the frame by giving up a single to Shea Langeliers on a swinging bunt. In a disputed decision, Childress handled the closing duties over to Junior Corbin Martin. Martin gave up back-to-back singles before Aaron Dodson laid down a solid sacrifice bunt to set up runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 Out.

Martin intentionally walked Hunter Seay before striking out TJ Raguse putting the Aggies one out away from ending the game. However, Cascadden sent a shot to left center giving Baylor the walkoff win.

What did we learn about this weekend?

This weekend showed a lot about this Texas A&M baseball team, both good and bad. Friday night could not have gone better as the Aggies dominated Texas Tech the entire game. However, Saturday and Sunday ended not only badly but in similar fashions, with the inability to close games late.

It’s clear Texas A&M needs to establish a closer for late game situations. In my opinion, Kaylor Chafin deserves a lot of credit for his performance on Saturday night and should be the first choice closer.

Walking five batters in a row and errors in the bottom of the 9th are inexcusable. However, this young team gained a lot valuable experience this weekend which will pay off later this season. Bottom line, this Aggie team will go as far as the bullpen allows them to.
