With Texas A&M basketball's season ending against Michigan in the round of 32, questions have emerged as to what the Aggie basketball program will look like with a handful of pieces leaving College Station after this season.
Rumors have emerged about Buzz Williams shopping himself to leave Texas A&M, and in a way, this isn't too surprising considering Williams' main crew throughout the years is going their separate ways.
I said earlier in the week that it would make sense for Williams to find himself elsewhere simply because another rebuild from the scratch would be another multiple season project. The question now: what will Texas A&M basketball look like if Buzz actually takes that leap of faith elsewhere?
With or without Buzz, Texas A&M basketball would rebuild from scratch
This is probably the harsh reality that Aggie fans have likely already admitted.
The 2024-25 Aggie basketball team had the pieces they needed, they had their veteran star in Wade Taylor IV becoming the school's all-time leading scorer, a great transfer in Zhuric Phelps leading charge at guard with or without Taylor IV on the floor, and big men depth unlike any other in the country.
There have been plenty of names being thrown in the transfer portal for potential A&M additions, but while new additions might be on their way, it only makes if a new coach is on their way to College Station. This is very similar to how John Calipari had to build Arkansas from the ground up, and he was just a few moments away from an Elite 8 appearance. We're not saying that will happen for the Aggies next year, but building from scratch is of course not a new thing at all.
It's a new era in College Station for the football, basketball and baseball teams, it only makes sense that Buzz leaving would wipe the slate clean for another five years of growth. For Buzz: he helped Texas A&M to some of their best AP poll numbers in years, if the Michigan game was his last, then kudos to him for building this program from the ground up.
