Early on in Texas A&M’s game against Kentucky, Aggie fans were relieved to see that Mike Elko was doing so much to get freshman RB KJ Edwards involved in the game. Edwards is one of the most explosive and talented offensive players on the roster for the Aggies, and his juice was needed on this squad in a big way, so fans have been clamoring for him to be featured more strongly ever since their first glimpse of his talent in game one of the season.

Fans were puzzled, then, as to why Edwards got no touches in the second half of the game against Kentucky. The disastrous third quarter meant that the Aggies were abandoning the run game in favor of a passing attack in an attempt to come back from down three touchdowns, but Edwards is a player who is effective as a receiver as well, so that didn’t fully explain things.

In the postgame presser, however, Elko revealed why this was the case. The talented freshman was apparently injured late in the second quarter against the Wildcats, making him the second explosive talent on the offensive side of the ball to leave the game with an injury following Terry Bussey.

Dark clouds gathering as Mike Elko updates KJ Edwards’ injury status

Edwards was a big part of the game plan for the Aggies in this one, as Elko acknowledged in the presser, but that all went awry when he went down with injury.

Edwards, for his part, was productive when he touched the ball, recording 5.6 yards per carry on the day— the best of the running backs in the game. With Jamarion Morrow already battling an injury, the Aggies really cannot afford to lose another running back— given that Deondrae Riden is set to miss the season as well, that makes three of the Aggies’ five scholarship running backs that are injured.

If the depth at the position is now only Rueben Owens and Carsyn Baker, it will be a really huge issue for the Aggies. Both Owens and Baker are talented players, but you cannot navigate an SEC schedule if you’re down to only two running backs three games into the season.

While Edwards’ injury was enough to keep him out for the remainder of the Kentucky game, though, it’s not yet certain that it is an injury serious enough to keep him out for extended time. Elko was obviously not very specific about the nature of the injury, so there’s definitely a chance that the Aggies could get Edwards back sooner rather than later.

With a huge and now extremely pivotal game in Baton Rouge next week, though, the Aggies need all the help they can get— and if Edwards is unavailable, it’s going to be a big time problem. That goes double for if Jamarion Morrow misses the game as well. Things could get ugly very, very quickly for the Aggies— hopefully, Edwards makes his way back to the active roster soon.
