Texas A&M’s 2027 recruiting class had nothing but good news for quite some time, but recently, things have been nothing but one gut punch after another. The Aggies seemed to be leading for multiple five-star players— and they still are, in several cases— but there have been a couple of dismaying developments recently.
Texas A&M was a leader for five-star LB Kaden Henderson for quite some time, but recent intel from Rivals has him trending towards Notre Dame. The Aggies seemed like they were far and away ahead of the pack for Albert Simien as well, but a report this morning made it seem like LSU had significantly closed the gap for the five-star IOL from the Boot.
Now, it looks like the final nail is in the coffin for Texas A&M’s chances with their top remaining target. The twists and turns in the recruitment of John Meredith have been well-documented, but now it looks like the final one will not be favorable for the Aggies.
Texas A&M 5-star CB target John Meredith announces decision date as Aggies’ chances fade
Meredith has announced that he will be going public with his decision this Thursday, June 19. This aligns with rumors that he was looking to make a decision before the month was out, but it is also dismaying to Aggie fans for exactly one reason.

That reason is simple: though the Aggies got an earlier official visit from Meredith, and appeared to do everything they could to get him in the boat, he still took his official to Texas the weekend before last and has not been back to College Station since. Generally speaking, getting the final visit is what you want in high school recruitments, and there was some thought that Meredith would be coming back to College Station before announcing, but that never materialized.
Without getting Meredith back on campus, most agree that the Longhorns still hold the momentum in this key recruitment. That’s a true gut punch for the Aggies if that all holds through Thursday’s decision, as Texas A&M was in pole position for so long in this one.
It can only sting so much, of course, as the Aggies already have a lockdown cover man committed in Raylaun Henry. That’s not even to mention that they have two other five-star defensive backs pledged in JayQuan Snell and Kamarui Dorsey, and great chances with the second-ranked cornerback in the nation, Joshua Dobson.
Still, this would be a direct victory for Sark and the Longhorns for a top in-state recruit, which has Aggie fans feeling pretty bummed. When you’re recruiting at the level Texas A&M is, though, some schools will throw everything but the kitchen sink at a single battle in order to stop your momentum— and when that school is Texas, you know they’ll pony up big time to save face.
However this turns out, the Aggies’ class is still going to be elite. However, it may just be missing that special final touch that most Texas A&M fans were hoping for if things pan out the way they seem to be trending currently.
