Texas A&M fans were dismayed, if not surprised, to see John Meredith commit to the Texas Longhorns today over the Aggies, in a result that is the culmination of where this recruitment has been trending in previous weeks. Texas A&M was able to get Meredith on campus not too long ago, but it wasn’t enough to stem the tide, as the Longhorns would do anything they could to get this in-state victory over the Aggies.
You can bet that the Aggies will remain involved with the Meredith recruitment right up until pen meets paper for his National Letter of Intent, but they also need to respond. Though Texas A&M has three five-star defensive backs already in the boat, including a top-rated corner in Raylaun Henry, they are still looking at one more big name to round out the class.
That big name is a player that the Aggies have had an in with for a long time— and though he’s not the number one corner in the nation, he’s extremely close. Joshua Dobson, out of the Charlotte, NC area, is a player that the Aggies need to lock down with a quickness.
Texas A&M must respond to John Meredith loss by adding Joshua Dobson to their class quickly
Dobson is currently finishing his final official visit out in Columbia, South Carolina. He’s seen schools like Auburn, Michigan, Texas A&M, and the in-state Gamecocks, but it’s those last three that are considered by many to be his top schools.
There was a lot of LSU momentum for a while in his recruitment, but the Aggies have seized back a lot of mojo after he came to campus a few weeks back. When he canceled his visit to Baton Rouge, the Aggies seemed like they were far and away the favorites for his services.
Michigan and South Carolina have made some pretty convincing pitches, however, so things are tighter than maybe many Aggie fans would like. However, there’s one thing that Texas A&M has working in their favor.
Dobson has been this high on Texas A&M thus far while they were actively recruiting both him and Meredith. With the latter now headed elsewhere (at least for now, I guess), Texas A&M can dedicate even more resources to this recruitment— manpower, playing time projections, and the rest.
Dobson is by no means a backup plan for the Aggies, but with one of their top two remaining corner prospects now off the board— and the thought having always been that they would only get one of the two at most— there have been some things clarified. Texas A&M must act quickly in order to get Dobson in the boat.
He currently has a decision date set for the first of July, so the Aggies have a little bit of time if he sticks to that timeline. However, we’ve seen many recruits move those decisions up a little bit in different situations, so it’s conceivable that Dobson does the same— hopefully, in favor of the Maroon and White.
