Texas A&M football fans elated after first three rounds of NFL Draft go swimmingly for Aggies
Texas A&M football fans have been frustrated recently with the team’s lack of draft performance. The Aggies have had plenty of talent come through campus, but their draft production has not matched the recruiting rankings in the latter part of the Jimbo Fisher era.
However, only one year into Mike Elko’s tenure, it looks like those tides might be turning. Through three rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Aggies have had three of their top prospects drafted, overjoying those fans who were watching with a skeptical eye just days before.
Shemar Stewart was the first Aggie drafted, going 17th overall to the Bengals. Nic Scourton slid out of the first round, but Carolina picked him up at pick 51. Then, not long after, Shemar Turner was picked up in the second round as well at pick 62.
That makes three defensive linemen drafted for the Aggies through two rounds, and with three completed, they remain the only A&M players to have their names called. With several other draft-eligible players coming out from A&M, now the real test begins.
Could Elko have done a good enough job this last year with some of these transfers in particular to get them drafted? For a guy like BJ Mayes, that’s certainly a possibility, if a somewhat slim one at the current moment.
Still, most of the talk this year has been about the lack of true depth in this draft, so you could see a team that may have taken a shine to Mayes or another Aggie taking a late-round swing. That would be a great move in my book, as BJ in particular is a guy that can contribute at the NFL level to my eyes.
Even if the Aggies only end up with three players drafted, though, it’s still an achievement to have those three go so highly. It certainly defeats what the Ags have done over the past few years in the draft, and it hopefully signals a change of fortunes now that Elko is heading up the program.
