Shocking quote from John Meredith infuriates Longhorns by showing where his heart really lies

This was an unexpected turn of events in this recruitment, to say the least— but it may signal something big for the Aggies.

Texas A&M fans everywhere were disappointed, if not surprised, when the nation’s top cornerback, John Meredith, committed to the Texas Longhorns last week. Meredith had been a heavy Aggie lean for a long time, but over this past spring, the Longhorns made a move to take the lead in his recruitment.

The Aggies did what they could, getting Meredith back on campus a couple of times, to stem the tide, but when decision day came, Meredith ended up picking burnt orange rather than maroon. After the Aggies were the leader for such a long time, this was a bit of a bummer for many fans who had been following the recruitment.

It’s not hard to figure out exactly what happened here, of course— the Aggies are in the midst of building a historic recruiting class, and the Longhorns, psychologically unable to handle the number of Ls they were taking to the Aggies on the trail, committed every resource they had to landing this head-to-head win. You have to expect that kind of thing when facing off against Texas on the trail, and in this case, it worked out for them.

However, when you use such a strategy, you sometimes land players whose sentiment about being at your school is rather tepid. A recent quote from Meredith, who was asked about those finalists in his recruitment, signaled something similar and worrying for Texas fans, while giving the Aggies the slightest crack in the door.

John Meredith shows his heart lies with Texas A&M despite Longhorn commitment in latest quote

This quote from Meredith on the recruitment has absolutely set Longhorn fans aflame with fury over the past day or so, and it’s not hard to see why.

Think about this for a second. Longhorn fans are in the midst of celebrating victory in this battle of a recruitment, and then he comes out and talks about how much he loves A&M and that his choice was “just business” rather than a personal decision. If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about how this recruitment panned out, then I don’t know what will.

Is this a foot in the door for the Aggies? It very well might be. Texas A&M has a few targets to whom they had committed some resources looking to go elsewhere, so maybe they could make another run as the time dwindles until signing day— and it seems all but certain that they will, in fact.

It would be quite the reversal if the Aggies were able to actually land Meredith when all is said and done. It seems like College Station is the place he wants to be, based on this quote, so if the Aggies could give him enough of a “business” reason to flip, then we may see that happen.

The Longhorns won’t go quietly, but Meredith may have just made it a bit easier for their fans to wish him farewell. You won’t find a single Texas fan who would be pleased with Meredith saying he “love[s] A&M to death,” so many won’t be able to abide these comments.

This is another interesting turn in a recruitment that has taken many of them. With the no. 2 corner in the nation, Joshua Dobson, announcing soon, we’ll see where this story goes next.
